#40: Washington
Washington’s placement near the higher-income end comes from strong tech, aerospace, and biotech sectors concentrated around Seattle. However, the state’s median income is held down by high living costs and lower-wage regions in eastern and southwestern areas. This contrast prevents the statewide numbers from rising even further.

Further gains are likely if innovation continues spreading beyond the Seattle metro. Investments in clean energy, semiconductor manufacturing, and rural broadband may bring higher-paying jobs to more communities. If housing affordability improves, the state’s strong industries could lift more residents and raise overall income.
