Fredi Washington’s best-known performance came in Imitation of Life, where she played a light-skinned Black woman who passes as white. Audiences often assumed Washington did the same, but the actress proudly identified as Black and strongly rejected suggestions that she hide her heritage in public.

Offscreen, Hollywood’s racist casting system left Washington almost nowhere to go. Studios considered her too light-skinned for servant roles commonly given to Black women, yet restrictions against interracial romance blocked her from playing opposite white leading men. Her promising film career quickly narrowed dramatically.
