#12: Therapy Scenes Drew From Real Psychology Ideas
Many of Bob Hartley’s sessions on The Bob Newhart Show were loosely inspired by real psychology concepts. The writers often started with legitimate therapeutic ideas, then exaggerated them just enough to make them funny without crossing into cruelty.

That approach helped the show keep a respectful tone. Bob Hartley wasn’t mocking his patients, just reacting to human behavior at its most neurotic. It gave the comedy a grounded feel and made the therapy scenes feel smarter than typical sitcom setups.
