#35: James K. Polk Banned Dancing and Drinking at the White House
James K. Polk ran the most tightly wound White House in history. No dancing, no drinking, no games — everything fun was basically outlawed at official events. Polk believed strict formality kept things orderly, but guests probably felt like they were attending government-hosted detention.

The vibe must have been intense. Imagine a 19th-century party with zero dancing and only water to drink. Polk got things done, but he definitely wasn’t the life of the party. His events make “lemonade diplomacy” look wild by comparison.
