#2: Carroll O’Connor Now
After All in the Family, Carroll O’Connor continued Archie’s story in Archie Bunker’s Place before reinventing himself as the thoughtful Southern police chief Bill Gillespie in In the Heat of the Night. His range proved he could do much more than comedy—he was equally powerful in drama.

O’Connor passed away in 2001 at the age of 76. Off-screen, he was known for his intelligence, compassion, and advocacy for addiction awareness after losing his son. Decades later, Archie Bunker remains his crowning achievement—a character who forced America to laugh at itself, and maybe even learn a little.
