What Ever Happened to the Cast of The Love Boat

Burl “Gopher” Smith was the ship’s good-natured purser—part problem-solver, part accidental troublemaker. He meant well but often found himself in hilarious predicaments, usually involving romance, misplaced luggage, or a mix-up that sent the whole crew scrambling. Gopher’s boyish charm and eagerness to please made him the ship’s comic heart.

Fred Grandy played Gopher with perfect timing and warmth. His expressive face and gentle awkwardness made the character both funny and endearing. He was the everyman on a floating fantasy, the crew member most viewers could see a bit of themselves in.
