#35: Ana Gasteyer Then
Ana Gasteyer brought a refined, character-driven brilliance to SNL during the late ’90s and early 2000s. Her work ranged from deadpan NPR hosts to unhinged music teachers, each crafted with remarkable precision. She excelled at playing overly serious personalities pushed into absurdity, giving the show a uniquely intellectual comedic flavor.

Before joining the cast, Gasteyer trained at Northwestern and developed her skills in the LA improv scene. Her early stage experiences honed her musicality, timing, and commitment to character detail. That foundation made her performances on the show feel fully realized, even in the shortest sketches.
